Assignment: For this assignment, each student will be writing basic documents—ones that are common in many work environments. You will need to choose three from the following options: letter, memo, email, blog, wiki, or basic PR documents like a press release. For most of those documents, students will be able to find information in the book, although some may require additional research. Students will create their own scenarios for each document based around the company/brand created during WP1. Please note that you cannot use the exact same content/scenario for each type of document (there are differences in audience/purpose that make it impossible). While these are probably some of the easiest (shortest) documents you will write, it is a mistake to assume that they are not important. These types of documents reflect on you and your company on a daily basis. They enable clear communication and teamwork. They can also be used in legal situations so you have to be careful about who your audience is (both primary and secondary), be clear in your purpose for communication, and professional in the execution of the document. Your task is to • analyze your audience and purpose • create three different polished, professional documents • write an overview of the assignment for your portfolio that o details why you choose the various document types o explains and justifies your choice of audience and purpose in selecting and writing the document o explains and justifies any special criteria you are using for this assignment. Required Documents: There are three key documents that each student will turn in: the pre-write, the documents representing pieces of writing you would do in your field/company, and an overview for the Digication Portfolio explaining your project for that audience. Rough and Final Drafts • The Examples: Three different document types that represent writing for your fictional company. Students get to choose the scenarios, which must be substantial enough for a Writing Project. Keep in mind that you will not be able to use the exact same content for the three documents. Be sure that the document is not simply a template or form letter (i.e. you need to create the document “from scratch”). • Portfolio Overview: A clear explanation of the project including your reasoning for choosing the various document types, the major audience/purpose considerations, and the major criteria considerations for the document. Do not focus on the content of the documents; rather, the focus should be on the choices you made in terms of the writing (audience, tone, organization, formatting, etc.).
